The sensors and devices that I'm using in my Home Assistant setup

The sensors that I use can be devided into 4 main groups:
  1. Wifi
  2. Zigbee
  3. Bluetooth
  4. 433Mhz

1. Wifi
I started out using wifi devices and sensors because they are easy to integrate, easy to create yourself (using ESP32 boards) and easy to maintain because many have a dedicated webpage for configuration. Slowly I'm moving away from Wifi to Zigbee and Bluetooth because I'm starting to sense that my Wifi is starting to give me more and more problems.
A selection of wifi devices that I still use are:
  • ESP32 devices for Wled and for a bunch of temperature / humidity / presence / light sensors
  • My TV, stereo, dishwasher, solar inverters, etc

2. Zigbee

Because I’m running into issues with my Wi‑Fi network getting congested by all kinds of Wi‑Fi sensors, I’m gradually adding more Zigbee devices.

I started by building a solid foundation: installing plenty of smart Zigbee power plugs that also act as Zigbee routers. I chose Girier power plugs because they have a good reputation online. As a bonus, I also needed some smart plugs to control non‑smart devices, such as floor lamps and other standing lights.

Once that foundation was in place, I began adding mmWave presence sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, smart buttons, door and window sensors, and a sun and rain meter. The smart blind motor I described in this blog post is also a Zigbee device.

To control and read all these devices i use Zigbee2MQTT in my Home Assistant setup, and this is working very steady the last couple of years.

3. Bluetooth
I'm using Bluetooth primarily for cheap temperature and humidity sensors that are widely available on sites like AliExpress

4. 433Mhz
I used to have a lot of  presence and temperature and humidity sensors connected to my Home Assistant, but nowadays I mainly use if for the few temperature and humidity sensors that i didn't yet replaced by Zigbee or Bluetooth sensors. The only device that I really need it for is my Somfy sunshades for the garden room, these shades work via the Somfy RTS protocol that uses 433Mhz communication via the RFXcom.
